Agave Distillate is an exquisite alcoholic beverage derived from the Agave plant. Like Tequila and Mezcal, Agave Distillate is a versatile spirit that offers a unique taste profile but distinguishes itself through its production and certification process. This distilled liquor is crafted by fermenting and distilling the juice or sap extracted from the heart of the Agave plant. The result is a smooth and refined spirit with complex flavours, showcasing the rich heritage and craftsmanship associated with Agave-based beverages.
One of the key differences between Agave Distillate, Tequila, and Mezcal lies in their production methods and regional associations. Tequila, a well-known Mexican spirit, is made exclusively from the Blue Weber Agave plant and must adhere to strict production regulations, including being produced in specific regions of Mexico. Mezcal, another traditional Mexican spirit, can be crafted from various species of agave plants and is often characterised by its distinctive smoky flavour, achieved through the traditional method of roasting the agave hearts in underground pits. In contrast, Agave Distillate provides distillers with more flexibility in terms of the agave varieties used and production techniques, resulting in a wider range of flavour profiles and expressions.
While Tequila and Mezcal have recognised certifications that ensure the spirits meet specific criteria, some brands choose not to pursue these certifications for various reasons. Obtaining the Tequila or Mezcal certification involves strict adherence to specific production methods, including the type of agave used, the region of production, and the distillation process. By opting for Agave Distillate, brands can explore different agave varieties, production techniques, and flavour profiles that may fall outside the regulatory requirements for Tequila or Mezcal. This allows them to showcase their creativity and craftsmanship, offering consumers a diverse and unique range of Agave-based spirits.
While controversial, a number of distillers are choosing to label their product "agave distillate" rather than Tequila or Mezcal as a means of taking a stance against the CRT or MRT - the regulating authorities in Mexico.
