Corte Vetusto Mexicano Mezcal - Australian Exclusive (700ml / 49%)
Corte Vetusto Mezcal has launched an ultra-rare ‘ancestral’ expression as part of its ‘mesquite smoked’ craft portfolio. Only 70 bottles of the 100-per-cent agave spirit, produced in Oaxaca, have been released.
Crafted by fourth-generation ‘maestro mezcalero’ Isidro Damian, Corte Vetusto Ancestral is an un-aged spirit made with Sierra Negro agave, a rare sub-species of agave Mexicano which is sustainably grown and harvested on Damian’s estate in Villa Sola de Vega.
It is produced using traditional methods, with the agave hearts hand-mashed in a wooden ‘canoa’ with wooden mallets and then left to naturally ferment in open-topped wooden vats.
As an ancestral mezcal, distillation occurs exclusively in wood-fired clay pots. It is distilled to proof, and the distiller says it contains notes of black pepper spice, green peppers, grapefruit and green mango with some wood smoke.
A very special and very limited production of bottles just to launch the brand in Australia. The agave ‘Mexicano’ has been sourced from Juans friends land. With only enough agave to produce 49litres this is something very special.
Corte Vetusto mezcal is hand-crafted by Juan Carlos Gonzalez Diaz, a 4th generation Zapotec Maestro Mezcalero. The art of mezcal making was passed down through the generations since his great grandfather, Don Mauro. The name of the brand Corte Vetusto means "the ancient cut" and comes from an old story about a master mezcalero's desire to create a cut of mezcal so divine that it invokes the spirit of generations before him. That sacred distillation of earth, fire and history is the Corte Vetusto.
